Common sense and common "Army" sense are two totally different things.
I've got pretty good common sense. (Ab's lack of common sense does not come from me!)
If I had common "Army" sense.....
I would not have gotten excited LAST month about Gunner coming home THIS month. He's not.
I would have made notarized copies of my POA's, so that when the house flooded and they were ruined, that I would not be trying to get one from Afghanistan, like yesterday, since my ID card expires in mere days.
I would not have taken on so much in March thinking that Gunner would be home, because surely we all know that the Army will change things.
I would have switched our doctors to a closer location as soon as we moved on post, because trying to get Em into the doctor for her ankle is stressful for the whole family since we are still assigned to the Academy. (Plus side, I love them there, but the drive and time it takes is getting old!)
I would have sent a few more cards to Gunner in case he was extended, because then because of the laws of the Army, he would have missed them all and been home already.
I would have hired a maid like I did last deployment.
What common "Army" sense things can you add to the list?

I didn't have any common Army sense during our deployment last year. It was my first... and hopefully the last. I didn't plan enough, didn't know enough, did rest enough. Being an Army Wife is forever changing and I think there is little we can do about the common Army sense we are SUPPOSED to have!
I am sorry that he is getting delayed. Ugh. I guess i am most guilty of actually believing when I get dates and making plans! Let down almsot every time, you would think I know better by now.
I would have to agree with the "getting your hopes up." My husbands last deployment was a nightmare. I got a date that he was coming home, then two days before that, its pushed back two. then three. then a week. I should have known not to get my hopes up either. "Hurry up and wait." I believe thats the army's motto.
Something I can add to the Army Common Sense.
DONT start a countdown at 200. You'll go absolutly crazy before you even get out of the tripple digets. TRUST ME.
Oh my gosh! I love this post!! LOL! It is exactly how I felt during my deployment and then some!
If I had any USMC sense, I would have remembered to verify the hours of operation for the ID card/DEERS dept on the the Naval base before showing up to get my new ID. I also would have remembered that it was going to expire before making it all the way through the checkout line at NEX and having them take away my ID in front of everyone! I also would have remembered to figure out how to get on base without my military ID and verified that I could in fact do that.... Sigh. :)
I also would have remembered to put the husbands orders somewhere logical so that I could find them all million times I needed them while he was gone. You would think I would have learned that lesson the first time, but for some reason, I just didn't think I would need them again... Dumb, I know.
And I would for sure have learned to not believe any thing I hear... they never come home when they say it's going to happen. :( And it's high time I learn to stop getting me hopes up. I think I"m going to tattoo the phrase, "the only constant in the military is change" on my forehead so that I remember next time. :)
And I for sure will get a cleaning service next time! Great idea!
Re your ID card: Is the base you're at unlike the few we've been at? At the few we've been at (Riley/Lewis/Eglin), if your spouse is deployed, you can bring in two forms of ID, and a copy of their deployment orders, and they let you replace your ID if you don't have a POA.
sorry for the delay :(
I was just thinking to myself that I need to hire a maid this time, like I did last (why on earth am I thinking I really can do all this???)
Just wanted to let you know that I loved this post so much that I linked to it in my blog. :)
Great post. Brought back memories from our first deployment.
My fiance's homecoming date got extended an extra month too! It's so annoying because like you, I made a list of everything I wanted to do and have been going like crazy to get things done. I even made an earlier appointment to take the dog to the groomers which now I have a dilemma. Do I take him again before he really needs to go and spend the money, or do I just leave him and have my fiance come home to a not so clean dog? Things like this seem so silly, but they all matter! Ugh...
Ugh a delay! Gotta love the Army.
Although your notes are helpful and will be tucked away in my memory for our next deployment!
Oh I love love love this post.
I can add never scheduling anything important because that's exactly when your partner will call from Afghanistan for the first time in months (and let you know that they'll be out on more missions so they won't be able to call for another few weeks/months)
Nothing worse than missed calls when you can't call back :(
3 Deployments down i've learned my lesson.
The Army has struck again (and again) but you are ever the optimist! Even if you have been an Army wife for near forever.
Just think, this time next year you guys will be together on a grand new adventure (and you won't be living under the bridge. I guarantee it.)!
My personal Army Sense Lesson: no matter how many times my husband told his mother it wasn't a good idea for her to come to stay with us and see his "coming home" ceremony, she still had to awkwardly hear it from me. Twice.
And then I had to lie about the date anyway to prevent her from showing up on our doorstep unannounced.
Wait, is that Army sense or Marriage sense?
